Boswellia is an Ayurvedic herb often used in combination with another Ayurvedic herb Turmeric (Curcuma longa). I use both these herbs in my formulations and in particular in our PLUS Range.
Boswellia is a small deciduous tree native to the dry hills of India. It is often referred to as Indian Frankincense as it’s a close relative of the famous biblical Frankincense (Boswellia carterii). When the bark of these trees is cut the tree exudes a resin-like secretion that then solidifies to a gum when it is exposed to the air. The fragrant resin produced by Boswellia carterii has been used for centuries as incense and for its embalming properties.
Traditionally, Boswellia resin has been used in Ayurvedic medicine both externally and internally. Externally the resin is used for its astringent and anti-inflammatory actions whilst internally its main use is for respiratory, rheumatic and digestive disorders. It is principally used as an anti-inflammatory and antiarthritic.
The main constituents of the resin are the various Boswellic acids, an essential oil, and other oils. Research and clinical studies have been undertaken on the Boswellic Acids which have confirmed its use for supporting joint health, effective calm digestion, and respiratory health.
