For the first time in a few months, I've been able to get out and compete every weekend for the last few weeks. It's been an absolute pleasure to get out and about on my new steed called Headley. Headley accidentally ended up on my lorry after I went to go and pick up some racehorses from a trailer in South Wales. He found his way onto my lorry as I was asked to sell him on behalf of his owner who had used him last winter for hunting and has done very little with him since. He wouldn't be my usual type as I'm sure you'll see from the photo he's a coloured and considerably thicker boned then my usual type of lean, mean, racing machine.
He has somehow found a way into my heart and is proving himself everyday with his fantastic, relaxed attitude to life and his talent in the dressage and show jumping arena. We've been out to three competitions now and he has been placed in the top 4 at every competition gaining scores of over 70% in his dressage and jumping double clears. To look at he may look like a chunky old, coloured horse but he has Jumbo's breeding lines and scope to burn. My plan is to train him up over the winter months and enjoy some winter league dressage and show jumping and then see what happens as the eventing season kicks off in March. I'm looking forward to getting some hunting in and really getting to know him over the winter months.
The racehorses are certainly keeping me busy at the moment. With winter fast approaching, many yards are ready to offload their summer racehorses to make way for the new season’s recruits. This means I currently have a full house and two horses waiting in Ireland for a space to crop up back here in Wales. I can see a busy winter ahead, but nothing pleases me more than seeing these fantastic horses go on and start their new careers having learnt a little bit about life outside of racing here at Gwernant in West Wales.
My newest recruits arrived yesterday evening, one of them being a lovely 7-year-old who goes by the name of Prince Charming, the other being a 6-year-old mare who goes by the name of Caroline's Quest. Both are about 15.2hh and will be looking for long-term eventing homes once they've learnt a little bit more about life outside of racing here at the farm.
