The herb Eyebright - Euphrasia officinalis as it name suggests is a herb used extensively for helping support healthy eyes and any area in the head. We use Eyebright in our respiratory supplements where it is included for maintaining healthy clear sinuses and eyes. A lotion for bathing eyes can be made from the herb. See our Did you know tab for information on making it into an eye wash and our How do I use it for guidelines. Eyebright can be mixed into the feed and is included in our Shake No More Gold and Freeway supplements for horses.

  • Eyebright herb (Euphrasia officinalis)

Guidelines*

  • Horses: 20 to 30 grams daily
  • Add to feed on a daily basis, if possible splitting the required amount between two feeds
  • Allow up to one month for benefits to be seen
  • Can be made into a tea for bathing eyes

*please note: we do not include feeding instructions on the packaging or include a scoop in the bag or tub.  This is due to the consistency of straight herbs eg roots are more dense than leaves or flowers, and they can be given to a variety of species.  For further research on using straight herbs for animals there are some good books available including Hilary Self's "A Modern Horse Herbal".  If you have any concerns about your animal's health please contact your vet immediately.  If you have any queries about using this product, or if your animal is pregnant, please contact our Helpline on Freephone 0800 052 3672 or email helpline@hiltonherbs.com

Eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis) herb makes a wonderful lotion for bathing sore, tired, irritated eyes, for both horses or humans.

To make an eyewash for horses or dogs put about 10g of Eyebright dried herb in a small saucepan with a lid, add 200ml of cold water, bring slowly to the boil, and simmer gently for 3 to 4 minutes. Keeping the lid on the saucepan, remove from the heat and leave to cool and once cooled the liquid can be strained. Soak cotton pads in the eyebright eyewash and bathe eyes. Don't waste the strained herb, this can be added to your horse's feed.  Any unused eyewash can be put into a closed jam-jar and kept for a couple of days in the fridge.
