Nerves & Hormones Information

Contemplation – The calm and steady eye of a horse that is relaxed, confident, and ready to respond to the rider’s aids. Sadly this is not always the case. Horses are governed by the "flight or fight" stress response, which prompts them to run from anything that may pose a threat to their lives. By this action, horses in the wild remain safe and alive! As owners we may inadvertently add to the stress we place on our horses by putting further restrictions on their liberty, isolated in stables away from the healthy interaction and companionship of their own kind, simply by not allowing them to "be a horse". Many horses will have to cope with lack of access to grazing, dependence on concentrated feeds, insufficient exercise, the stresses of competition and travelling, or seasonal hormonal changes. It is really no wonder that they become stressed, anxious, tense and display unpredictable behaviour. You will be pleased to know that the answer may be something as simple as increasing turnout time, reducing hard feed and giving the horse more exercise. Nature can also help. In this section you will find herbal calmers to help your horse maintain a calm, healthy, balanced nervous and/or hormonal system. Valerian free blends are also available. Last summer my pony Tequila moved from the south of France, where we used to live, up to Lincolnshire UK. It was a very long journey and my main concern was that she was undoubtedly going to be very anxious. About three weeks before our departure, I started giving her Temperamend. Tequila can be a little fussy and I was concerned as to whether or not she would eat it but, presumably because it must taste as good as it smells (the smell actually made me feel relatively calm myself), she ate it up with enthusiasm. She arrived very safely and very happily in England. The transport compagny said she was really calm and relaxed throughout the whole journey and that is thanks, to a large extent, to this product.

Being of the older generation i am not easily convinced about much! My story starts when i bought a 5 year old mare from the sales at Malvern! Boy was she Quirky! eventually she had to have a kissing spines op, when i was putting in an order for herbs i noticed the special needs link and found Tempramend for sensitve horses, I ordered it and it arrived quickly. I started feeding it straight away. She did a Walk trot dressage test on recently and won it and got 76%!!! Now I'm Hooked. totally different Horse! cant thank you enough...Sue

One of the herbs used in this product is Valerian (Valeriana officinalis).  Valerian is adored by both cats and mice. In the old days, when there was an apothecary or herbalist on every street, the herbs were often stored in wooden drawers in a large sideboard. It was said that you could always tell the valerian drawer because it would be rubbed shiny by the apothecary cat rubbing up against it and polishing the wood with its body. It is also suggested that the Pied Piper of Hamelin used valerian to entice the mice and rats to follow him out of the town.
