Respiration Information
  • Six horses galloping neck and neck, heads extended, nostrils flared, as they race across the plains. Lungs pulling in air to supply the muscles with vital oxygen. This is what we all love to see - the epitomy of equine health and fitness. It may be a native pony nimbly racing over rutted moorland, or a highly trained Thoroughbred galloping over the pristine turf of Ascot. Whatever the activity, for a horse to perform at its best it must have an efficient and healthy respiratory system, uncompromised by infection, irritation, inflammation, or residual mucus. Worldwide, air quality continues to deteriorate, leading to an increase in respiratory disorders in the human population. Our horses are no different, they breathe the same air as us and are proving to be just as susceptible to seasonal allergens as we are. Winter time brings its own set of problems, with reduced access to grazing and more hours spent in stables, often with restricted airflow which can contribute to poor respiratory health. To help you ensure that your horse’s respiratory system stays in optimum condition, we have formulated a range of dried and liquid herbal formulations, rich syrups, essential oil sprays, and homeopathics, to help your horse maintain a healthy respiratory system whatever the season. Our herbal supplements are formulated to help support healthy, efficient, airways and resistance to irritants and infections all-year round.  We particularly recommend Freeway or Freeway Gold for horses if they are stabled more in the winter or have restricted turnout both of which can contribute towards respiratory problems.

If  a horse is coughing or respiratory illness is suspected, then immediate equine veterinary attention should be sought.

How much do I have give?
The amount of herbs you need to give is generally dependent on the height of your horse, with some allowance for type. Full instructions will be found on the packaging but if you have any queries at all please do contact our Helpline 01460 270700 or email helpline@hiltonherbs.com for more information.
The quantity of herbs added to your horse or pony's feed can be slightly increased or decreased, depending on the circumstances. Very often a lower maintenance dose can be sufficient for a horse or pony that is going to be kept on the herbs long-term. Remember, like humans, all horses and ponies are individuals.

1.  Its not unusual for your horse or pony to have a 'snotty nose' after a week or so being on Freeway, this is just an indication that the herbs are doing their job.

2.  Eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis) herb makes a wonderful lotion for bathing sore, tired, irritated eyes, for both horses or humans.

To make an eyewash put about 10g of Eyebright dried herb in a small saucepan with a lid, add 200ml of cold water, bring slowly to the boil, and simmer gently for 3 to 4 minutes. Keeping the lid on the saucepan, remove from the heat and leave to cool and once cooled the liquid can be strained. Soak cotton pads in the eyebright eyewash and bathe eyes. Don't waste the strained herb, this can be added to your horse's feed.  Any unused eyewash can be put into a closed jam-jar and kept for a couple of days in the fridge.
